Hot Weather Driving

Extreme outdoor temperatures can create challenging travel conditions, and it pays to plan ahead before heading off down the road.

Prior to leaving, check all fluid levels in the engine, generator and cooling system, and add the necessary amounts in accordance with the owners’ manual. Use oil viscosity recommended for summer weather. Examine the charge air cooler for debris that may be blocking the fins. Wash the fins with a mild detergent and a soft brush to remove grime build up that can restrict the cooling system.

Carefully inspect all hoses and belts, and replace any that appear worn or damaged. Look for signs of leaks around hoses and on the ground.

The generator is an important tool for back up power that may be needed to operate the air conditioner. Run the generator under load, and service the oil and filters. Carefully inspect the generator exhaust system to assure it is structurally sound and remove any debris that may have built up around the exhaust opening.

Excessive heat increases evaporation of fluids inside the batteries. If your vehicle is equipped with Liquid Lead Acid batteries, check the cells often and add distilled water when needed. Keep the battery case clean and regularly check cables to assure they are firmly attached. Whenever possible, position the batteries in the shade, and when parked for the night, open the battery compartment to increase airflow.

Windshield wipers can become brittle from exposure to hot sunlight. Replace blades that appear worn, and clean new blades frequently by wiping with a rag soaked in windshield washer fluid. Top off the windshield washer bottle.

Tire air pressure should be checked each morning when the tires are cold. While parked, cover the tires to protect the rubber from exposure to sun.

Test the roof air conditioner to assure proper operation and wash the inside filters.

Check all awnings for proper operation, and when possible, park the RV in shade.

Clean the outside refrigerator vent to remove dust and debris. Inspect the burner and orifice. Refrain from over packing the refrigerator to promote maximum air circulation.

It is generally necessary to add additional amounts of deodorizer to the black tank during hot weather.

Practice extra caution when traveling with pets during hot weather. Never leave animals unattended in a hot vehicle and always be sure they have access to plenty of water.

While driving, keep a close eye on the dash gauges and pull over if unusual conditions arise. Avoid peak rush hour traffic times and consult traffic information services for road construction locations.
