Match the tow vehicle capacity to the maximum fully loaded trailer weight. Many tow vehicle manufacturers offer upgraded towing packages for pulling large fifth wheels, tow haulers and travel trailers.

It is recommended to install towing mirrors on the tow vehicle for added view along both sides of the trailer when passing in traffic and while backing in.

Brake controllers are required when towing a trailer equipped with electric brakes. The controller is designed as a communication tool inside the tow vehicle to alert the trailer brakes when vehicle braking occurs. Controllers are generally designed as either Time Delay or Proportional. Both types provide maximum braking power, however, Proportional is usually considered the better system because of its ability to more closely match incremental braking power to the trailer.

Unexplained trailer sway during braking could indicate a loose brake controller connection. Jack up the trailer and inspect at the backing plate connections. Use a circuit tester to confirm voltage at the connections. If no voltage is present, the problem is likely at the wire. The presence of voltage may indicate a fault in the brake actuating system.

A proper size hitch ball is rated greater than the gross trailer weight. Also take into consideration the weight rating of the ball mount and the rating of the trailer coupler. Keep the inside of the coupler clean and lightly lubricated to maintain smooth movement.

Trailer lighting must be connected to the tow vehicle wiring system. Before towing a trailer, do a visual inspection to assure the turn signals, brake lights and taillights are in working order.

Safety chains are provided with the trailer and should be secured to the tow vehicle by crossing them under the coupler. Leave only enough room to provide for tight turns to prevent chains from dragging on the ground while driving.

An important trailer feature to regularly inspect and maintain are the wheel bearings. If a grease cap is difficult to remove, rotate the hub and tap the cap lightly with a rubber mallet to loosen. Refer to the vehicle owner’s manual for all maintenance recommendations on the brakes and hub and drum assembly to assure continued proper operation of the wheels and hubs.
